Bernice Rubens

Bernice Rubens (1923–2004) was a Welsh novelist, best known for winning the Booker Prize in 1970 with her novel The Elected Member, making her the first woman and only Welsh author to receive the award. She authored 26 novels exploring themes of Jewish family life, identity, and human behavior, with notable works including Madame Sousatzka (filmed in 1988), I Sent a Letter to My Love (filmed in 1980), and Brothers. Born in Cardiff to Jewish immigrant parents, she wrote prolifically until her death in London.
