Arthur Waley

Arthur David Waley (1889–1966), born in Tunbridge Wells, England, was an English orientalist and sinologist renowned for his translations of Chinese and Japanese classics into English, including notable works like A Hundred and Seventy Chinese Poems, The Tale of Genji, and Monkey. Self-taught in Asian languages, he worked at the British Museum before dedicating himself to writing for general audiences, profoundly influencing modern poets such as W.B. Yeats and Ezra Pound.
