António Lobo Antunes

António Lobo Antunes was a Portuguese novelist and psychiatrist born in Lisbon in 1942. He served as a military doctor in Angola during the Portuguese Colonial War, an experience that profoundly influenced his writing, and published his debut novels in 1979 before dedicating himself fully to literature, earning major awards like the Camões Prize. He died in 2026 at age 83 after battling cancer and dementia.
