António Cândido de Mello e Souza

Antonio Candido de Mello e Souza (1918-2017) was a Brazilian literary critic, sociologist, professor, and writer renowned for his influential studies on Brazilian literature. He is best known for his seminal work Formação da Literatura Brasileira, a cornerstone of Brazilian literary criticism that traces the formative moments of national literature from 1750-1880.Unicamp Among his major achievements are multiple Prêmio Jabuti awards, the Prêmio Camões, and the Alfonso Reyes International Prize, and he played a key role in developing literary studies at the University of São Paulo.
