About Anita Brookner

Anita Brookner (1928-2016) was an English novelist and art historian, best known for her Booker Prize-winning novel Hotel du Lac (1984) and other works exploring themes of emotional isolation and disappointment among middle-class women, such as A Start in Life (1981) and Latecomers (1988). She began publishing fiction at age 53 after a distinguished academic career, including being the first woman Slade Professor of Fine Art at Cambridge (1967-1968), and was appointed CBE in 1990.
