About Alfred Duckett

Alfred A. Duckett (1917-1984) was an American author, journalist, speechwriter, and civil rights activist best known for collaborating with Jackie Robinson on the autobiography I Never Had It Made, which won the 1973 Coretta Scott King Award, and with Martin Luther King Jr. on speeches including the "I Have a Dream" address and the book Why We Can't Wait. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he worked as a columnist for Black newspapers like the Pittsburgh Courier and Amsterdam News, founded the magazine Equal Opportunities for minority graduates, and published poetry featured in Langston Hughes's anthology.African American Registry, New York Times, EBSCO Research Starters
