About Alexis Pauline Gumbs

Alexis Pauline Gumbs (born 1982) is an American poet, writer, independent scholar, and activist based in Durham, North Carolina. Known for her genre-defying experimental triptych Spill, M Archive, and Dub exploring Black feminist theory and ecological disruption, she holds a PhD from Duke University and has founded organizations like Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind. Her achievements include the 2023 Windham-Campbell Prize in Poetry, 2022 Whiting Award in Nonfiction for Undrowned, and her recent biography Survival is a Promise being named a Publisher's Weekly Top 10 Book of 2024.
