About Alexander Nemerov
Alexander Nemerov (born 1963) is an American art historian and author specializing in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American art, serving as the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Provostial Professor in the Arts and Humanities at Stanford University. His notable works include Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York (2021, finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography), The Forest: A Fable of America in the 1830s (2023), Soulmaker: The Times of Lewis Hine (2016), and Silent Dialogues: Diane Arbus and Howard Nemerov (2015). Major achievements encompass delivering the A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts (2017), receiving the Lawrence A. Fleischman Award for Scholarly Excellence in American Art History, and multiple fellowships including from the Smithsonian Institution.
