About Agustina Bessa-Luís

Agustina Bessa-Luís (1922–2019) was a Portuguese novelist and short-story writer renowned for diverging from neorealism to incorporate surrealism and metaphysical elements influenced by Proust and Kafka. Her breakthrough novel A Sibila (1954) won the Eça de Queirós Prize and established her as a major literary figure, with works often adapted into films by Manoel de Oliveira. In 2004, she received the prestigious Camões Prize for her contributions to Portuguese literature.
